The Lafayette Theater was a place plays written by whites and for white actors; however, there were featured black performers such as Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Many sources claim that the Lafayette Theater, also know as "The House Beautiful" was the first theater to desegregate in New York City.
